Record your camera or screen

Film yourself, your screen, or both, with your script on screen, straight into your Library.

Record films your camera, your screen, or your screen with you in the corner, right in the browser. The recording goes into your Library like an upload, gets its transcript a minute or two later, and can be cut by its words in the editor. Recording is free.

Make a recording

  1. Open Tools and pick Record.
  2. Pick Camera, Screen or Screen and camera. On a phone, only Camera is offered.
  3. Your browser asks to use your camera and microphone the first time. If you have more than one, pick which under Camera and Microphone; the bar under Microphone moves as you speak.
  4. If you like, paste your script. It scrolls over the camera while you record, so you can read it while looking at the lens. Pick how fast it scrolls.
  5. Choose Start recording. For a screen, your browser asks which window, tab or screen to share. A count of three, and it’s recording.
  6. Pause stops for a moment and carries on in the same recording. Stop ends it. Stopping the share from your browser’s own bar ends it too.
  7. Watch it back. Choose Keep it to save it to your Library, or Record again.

Keep the page open until it’s saved. Then choose Open it in the editor to start an edit with it, or Clean up the sound to take the noise out of it. See Clean up audio.

Screen and camera

With Screen and camera, the screen and the camera are saved as two files, your voice on the screen’s. Open it in the editor puts the screen on the timeline with the camera over it in the bottom-left corner, in step from the start. Drag the camera in the preview to move it or make it bigger, or delete its clip to leave just the screen.

Good to know

  • A recording can be up to an hour long.
  • Recordings are saved in the best format your browser records: MP4 where your browser can record it, WebM where it can’t. Both play everywhere in Shotz.
  • To cut it by what you said, open the editor’s Transcript once the transcript is in. See Edit by transcript.
